Jane
Gam-Dede is good at what she does. She is a brilliant fashion designer based in
Lagos. The Bayelsa born lady is the creative brain behind Twon-by-Jane, a
fashion retail label set up to cater for the 21st century women and
men’s fashion needs. She hails from Twon-Brass in Bayelsa state but she is
based in Lagos. She spoke to CITY PEOPLE’S Publisher, SEYE KEHINDE a few days
ago on what makes label stand out. Below are excerpts from the interview.
How did you develop an interest in Fashion?
For as long as I can remember I have always been
drawn to beauty, colours and perfect structures. So it’s only proper for me to
say that my interest in fashion was more a natural relationship. I guess, something’s you just have to have it in you.
Why
and when did you decide to become a fashion designer?
Hmmm! I will in 1998/2000 In 1998 I contest for
beauty pageant “Miss Carniriv” Rivers state,
I didn’t know where to get an evening gown, so I sketch a design and gave it to Senegalese tailor on my street, I own best dress and the dress made news. In 2000 at the Miss
Suru-lere and Miss Nigeria final’s I designed my own dress and the reaction
from audiences was just amazing, the reaction from those experiences made me
considered fashion designing as a
career, however it was in 2005 I started
making clothes for family and friends after I discover sample silk fabric at
Yaba market.
What
does fashion mean to you?
Fashion is the most powerful art there is. Fashion is walking art; it inspires us not
only to express ourselves but also our culture and identity. It’s why Fashion
designers search for inspiration from cultures, different eras, cities and
nature. Personally, it is self
expression. Fashion is more than something we adorn, for me fashion should
reflect my values, lifestyle and who I am
without even speaking. Its why my
brand motto is “dress to achieve not impress”.
What
does style mean to you?
Simple, easy, comfortable. It should be truest
reflected of one self.
How
do you achieve your personal style?
I go for comfort, as long I am comfortable, I am in.
I am not necessary one who go for what’s in vogue or trending, therefore I must wear. My style is a little old fashion I must say.
How
can women achieve a style that works for them?
Everyone have their own style and what works for
them but I have always advocated for classic while avoiding fleeting trends.
Like I said, I am old fashion.
